Concept note
Archival material and various historical sources from the 19th century until the beginning of the 20th century (1830–1919) have provided a diverse range of literature, discourses, and efforts by military and political actors, as well as administrative figures, in what has been termed "early colonial historiography" regarding Algerian society.
Generally, this body of literature facilitated the emergence of numerous studies by specialists in the fields of social, historical, cultural, and ethnic anthropology. Examples include Carette on the "Anthropology of Algeria"; Émile Masqueray and Robert Montagne on "Urban Centres"; Coppolani and Octave Depont on "The Zawiyas"; and Augustin Berque on "Sufi Orders and Algerian Elites." Other studies addressed themes such as "Customs and Traditions," "Desert Palaces," and "The Nobility of the Sahara" by authors like Eugène Daumas. Jacques Berque focused on "The Tribe," while others examined "Tents," "Pastoralism," "Settlement," and "The Makhzen" (as seen in the works of Castries and Villesant). Further topics included "Justice and the Courts" by Charles Roussel and "Land Ownership" by Maurice Pouyanne and Ernest Mercier.

The documentary material currently available in abundance across various national, French, and European archives has aided the preparation of academic and university studies. these have explored new case studies within Algerian society during the aforementioned period, addressing topics such as "Civil Status," the "Need for an Algerian Intelligentsia," "Proselytism," "Medicine and Health," and "Topography or Cartography alongside Geographical Sciences." They also covered the "Arabic Language," "Tamazight," "Islamic Legislation," and other cases of a cultural, anthropological, historical, and social nature within 19th-century Algerian society. This is precisely what the organisation of this study day aims to achieve.
