Concept note
Publishing in Algeria has undergone profound restructuring since the country gained independence in 1962. Situated at the crossroads of cultural policy and ideological imperatives, the industry has been shaped by political shifts and circumstantial changes at every stage of its evolution. Consequently, the transformation of Algerian publishing has followed a long political trajectory, defined by alliances of circumstance or necessity.
The editorial issues in Algeria place the broader subjects of books and reading at the heart of the debate. Indeed, the crisis within the publishing sector is rooted in two main factors:
The absence of a public policy promoting reading.
A general lack of public interest in books.
The current state of Algerian publishing compels us to examine the general organization of the literary field. By analyzing the relationships between the various stakeholders—authors, publishers, booksellers, and readers—we can gain an overview of how the sector truly functions, along with its social, cultural, and economic implications.
Furthermore, it is essential to study public book policies in Algeria to determine whether they align with reality on the ground. This includes examining the measures taken by the Ministry of Culture’s Book Directorate, as well as initiatives spearheaded by the Ministry of Women’s Affairs and Family, and the Ministry of National Education.
