History and the Relationship with National Memory
Concept note
The international symposium organised by the Centre for Research in Social Anthropology of History and Memory (CRASC), in partnership with the Centre for Political and Social Studies at the University of Montpellier, the conditions under which historical knowledge and collective memory are produced, as well as the methods by which they are disseminated, and analyses societies’ knowledge and perceptions of the past. This event aims to facilitate the exchange of research experiences on issues of memory within Algerian and French societies and the current challenges they face. It also provides an opportunity to analyse fieldwork experiences, methodologies and theoretical frameworks relevant to the field of the anthropology of memory.
Within the framework of this symposium, the colonial history of Algeria (1830–1962) constitutes a major theme that continues to attract the interest of researchers and intellectuals on both sides of the Mediterranean, and has captured the attention of successive generations of researchers, as evidenced by the development of academic research on this subject (doctoral theses, national research projects, collaborative research initiatives, and scholarly articles), because issues relating to memory appear complex, as anthropological studies confirm, insofar as they link knowledge of the past with its challenges, according to contexts
