Abstract
Throughout its past and present history, the Mediterranean city of Oran has distinguished itself by its strategic geographical position, which has granted it great importance in the promotion of commercial and cultural activities. It is precisely this aspect that the French colonial administration emphasized following the total occupation of the city in 1832.
Several European communities flocked to Oran, among whom the Spaniards were the most numerous and significant. In 1847, their numbers reached 31,000 individuals, primarily originating from Alicante and the Balearic Islands, making them the second-largest European community after the French within the colonial social fabric. They settled in neighborhoods close to those of the Arab Muslims and engaged in various important activities, notably in cooking, labor at the port of Oran, and nursing. Their influence on the social life of Algerians was considerable, just as they were influenced by it in return, making their existence far from simple.
Furthermore, Oran served as a refuge for Spanish Republicans fleeing the Franco regime in 1939. These exiles established their lives in the city, marked by resistance, political opposition, and other engagements.
Thus, this communication will focus on the daily lives of these Spaniards, who represented 65% of the city's European population, as well as their relationships with the Algerians.
