abstract

The book entitled Industrial Managers: The Conditions for the Formation of a Modern Social Elite, published by the Centre of research in social and cultural anthropology (CRASC) in 2005 and coordinated by Hacène Merani, examines the situation of industrial managers in Algeria from a sociological perspective. It focuses on the social, educational, and professional conditions that contribute to the formation of a modern elite capable of leading processes of development and modernization. The book is based on a field survey conducted among managers working in public economic enterprises. It analyzes their social backgrounds, educational trajectories, professional situations, and perceptions of their roles within both the organization and society. The study also investigates the obstacles hindering the emergence of this group as an influential social actor and devotes particular attention to the socio-professional status of women managers. The findings suggest that industrial managers constitute a strategic resource for development. However, their ability to fully assume their role remains closely linked to improvements in education and professional qualification, the advancement of economic enterprises, and the establishment of a social and organizational environment conducive to the emergence of a modern and dynamic professional elite.
